What all started as a rather ambitious idea for the International Day of Climate Action on October 24th last year has finally come to a close, with the finishing touches of the Seres 350 Movement video being done this morning and uploaded to youtube as I write this! What initially started as a back-of-the-napkin idea to raise awareness about Seres’ work with climate change in Central America has culminated into an inspiring, catchy 7 minute video-clip that left me with goose bumps and tears in my eyes (which could be attributed to it being 2am) when I watched the final cut.
When my original deadline of having the video ready in time for the Copenhagen Climate Summit in December last year came and went and still I was not done shooting and editing, I must admit that I felt a little disappointed in myself. However I persevered, and over the last few weeks, during the time-intensive editing process it gradually started to dawn on me that not having it ready for the Climate Summit was not really an issue. After all, what difference would one movie make at those discussions with all the evidence and reports already on the table?
What I realised was that it was what we did after those discussions that would be even more important, and the place where Seres’ contribution to the 350 Movement could have a greater impact. Because the 350 Movement is not about governments. And it’s not about politicians. It’s about you and me. It’s about what we can do, and what we will do, to take control of our future.
For the first time in human history, regardless of race, religion, colour, ethnic background or political affinity there is not one amongst us whose life will not be impacted by what lies ahead. For the first time in human history, facing a shared threat, we can say that we are truly global citizens.
As the photos came together, from people all around the world somehow connected to Seres and the work that we are doing, this fact really came home to me. Around the world – individually and yet connected through a common cause – we are working to create positive change. We are working to take control of our future, the future of our children, and the future of our planet.
And so here it is: the Seres 350 Movement. Just in time for Seres 1st year anniversary this Thursday 16th March. A celebration of our place side-by-side as global citizens, and the impact that we will have together.
